After 28 years of making music, Daft Punk is officially breaking up according to the duo’s publicist, Kathryn Frazier. She gave no reason as to why they are retiring.
The announcement was made in an eight-minute video titled “Epilogue”. It is a video taken from their film Electroma. The dates 1993-2021 are shown after one of the two singers explodes.
Formed in 1993 by Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, the two became part of and would later help define French house music. They released their debut album titled Homework in 1997. They would make their first public appearances in their iconic robot outfits in 2001 following the release of their follow-up album, Discovery. With this release, the group found widespread success through songs such as “One More Time” and “Hard, Better, Faster, Stronger”.
The duo managed to get a number of Grammy nominations throughout the late 1990s and through the early 2000s. They managed to win their first Grammys in 2008 for Best Dance Recording with the song “Harder Better Faster Stronger” and for the Best Dance/Electronic Album with Alive 2007. They would also win several Grammys in 2013 for Album of the Year with Random Access Memories, Record of the Year with “Get Lucky”, Best Pop Duo, Group Performance With “Get Lucky”, and Best Dance/Electronica Album with Random Access Memories.
