Letter from the Editor

Readers,

As I write this on Sunday evening, classes have officially not been canceled for Monday, meaning that we may, in fact, get the semester’s first full week of school this week. Cause for celebration, I say! (Or disappointment, depending on your attitude.)

Whether this is still true as you read this remains to be seen — for my Sunday-night self, at least.

We have a story on Page 6 this week that I had initially thought might be a little out of date by the time we got around to publishing it. But thanks to a seemingly never-ending sequence of winter storms, it is not. Katie Burns’ interview with Grounds Manager Steve Kelly is worth special attention this week. Kelly sheds some light on the heroic work the Wheaton grounds crew has done as Wheaton has been inundated with feet of snow in the last several weeks.

We might be inclined to take our comfort for granted during the winter weather we’ve had these last few weeks. But there is an army of people behind the scenes working to make sure we can safely navigate this campus. They deserve every ounce of our appreciation and gratitude — and the same goes for the dining hall staff that have also been there for us, day in and day out.

So make sure you thank them as you pass them on campus every day — goodness knows, they’ll be there.

We have some other interesting process stories this week that are an insight into the way Wheaton “does business” on an everyday level — Monique Ting’s ’15 page 5 piece on a minor (but interesting!) change in the course registration process, and Lucas Rosa’s ’18 interview with Vice President Brian Douglas on the inner workings of Wheaton’s endowment.

As always, if you have corrections, comments, concerns, or story pitches and tips, please feel free to reach out to me at butcher-nesbitt_robert@wheatoncollege.edu. It’d be a pleasure to hear from you.

See you around, all.
