This semester, there have been some changes in the student government representatives. There are three new senators: Joe Perez ’20, Christopher Orndoff ’21 and Emily Dionne ’21. James Clancy ’20, the vice education council chair, has moved up to the education council chair. Mateo Espinosa ’19, a former senator-at-large, is now the vice president and the former vice president, Sophia Hatzikos ’20, is the new student government association (SGA) president.
SGA has passed a new bill that combines the class council with the senate, which will change the form of the upcoming elections. Hatzikos is working on adding executive liaisons for sustainability and accessibility, with a proposed timeline of next year. She is currently working with other related groups and individuals who are concerned with the issues of sustainability and accessibility on campus to fully define what these positions will entail.
Hatzikos has also expressed her personal interest in working beyond the creation of these positions, hoping to create a strategic plan for the next five years to get students more deeply involved in the issue of sustainability. Hatzikos describes this semester as “exciting,” mentioning that the SGA will be working on both wrapping up initiatives from last semester as well as starting new ones. Three new clubs have been recognized: the South Asian Student Initiative (SASI), the Muslim Student Association (MSA), and WheAccess. SGA hopes to recognize more clubs throughout the spring semester.
SGA has also opened and passed funding for supplies for the Club Hub, which is located in the Balfour-Hood Campus Center and was previously known as the SGA room. New bulletin boards have been installed in Emerson Dining, Chase Dining, Meneely Hall and the Mars Center for Science & Technology. Toilet paper will be two-ply after spring break and two new sanitary product dispensers will be installed this semester.
SGA holds public senate meetings every Tuesday at 7- 9 p.m. in the Holman room of Mary Lyon. All students are encouraged and welcome to attend.
