The past week has proven to be phenomenal for the Lyons! The Wheaton College men’s soccer team, who are currently ranked second in the conference, have been triumphant in all of their matches this past week. There were stand-out performances from many of the players, including Wheaton’s Diego Medina ’22, who last week earned conference recognition and was named the NEWMAC defensive athlete of the week. Medina is the starting goalie for the Lyons.
Since last Tuesday, Oct. 1, the men have played in three games and taken the win from all of them. Currently, the team holds a 7-5-1 record within the season. For conference games, Wheaton has won two, but fell to MIT for their single loss. The Lyons have been having an astounding season so far, and are only expected to get better.
On Oct. 1, the men took on the Fighting Scots of Gordon College on Keefe Field. The Lyons dominated the game as they handed the Scots a loss with a 4-1 final score. The first goal came from Jack Brusso ’23, who sank the ball in the back of the net from the left side of the soccer field. The next three goals came from Ben DeSena ’22, Nick Vanini ’21, and Neil Fitzgerald ’20, in that order.
On Oct. 5, the men took down the Coast Guard Academy with a nail-biting 1-0 score. Although the Lyons were outshot 22-8, with the single goal made by Alberto Franceschi ’23, he buried the ball into the Bears’ net, leading them to a conference win. Franceschi managed to score early in the second half after an assist made by Antonio Rogliano ’22. Medina helped the team to a shut-out by making a remarkable ten saves in net.
Their third victory of the week took place here at Wheaton on Oct. 6, against Rhode Island’s Roger Williams University. The Lyons earned themselves three goals while the Hawks settled with one. First-half goals came from Franceschi and Jules Stewart ’20. This was Franceschi’s second game in a row, placing the Lyons on the board first. The sole goal in the second half was made by JD Souza ’20, who launched the ball into the net after an outstanding cross from Antonio Rogliano ’22.
The men’s next game will be played on Keefe Field at Wheaton this Saturday, Oct. 13, at 3 p.m. The match will be against conference competitor Worcester Polytechnic Institute, whose team is currently ranked right behind Wheaton at third in the NEWMAC conference.
