Volleyball Looking Towards a Strong Season

By Brooke Cloutier on October 3, 2019

This year, the volleyball team has shown its strength during the beginning of this years season. The team has a 10-5 win streak so far. They have a 1-1 streak in the NEWMAC conference. The team dynamic has proven successful so far, but the team believes that the bond will only grow stronger. “They are close and get along well,” said Coach Letourneau.

Half of the team is made up of first-year players, with only one senior, Becca Houghton ’20. Houghton recently reached 3,000 career assists, which adds to her already 250 aces, an exceptional feat. Currently, the women are ranked sixth in the NEWMAC conference and ranked an impressive twelfth in all of New England. The team has a solid ranking for this point in their season.

The team is sure to manifest its power during their upcoming games. The coach is excited about all the new talent being brought forth this year. “We lost three key players from last season,” explained Coach Latorneau, “but have added strong pieces through recruiting and offseason work to put us in position to have a very strong team this year as well.” Everyone on the team has faith that the rookies, as well as the experienced players,  will make this season a memorable one for the program.

Their main goal for this season is to make it to the NEWMAC playoffs where they are determined to make an impact. They are driven to make it further in the playoffs than they have in past seasons. Support from the Wheaton community is guaranteed to make a positive impact on their ambition to finish this season stronger than they ever have before.

The Lyon’s next game will be played against MIT in Cambridge on Tuesday, Oct. 1. It will be an essential game for the team, for MIT is also in the NEWMAC division. Volleyball will be searching for a win to improve their standings within the conference. The Lady Lyons are sure to make their mark on the court.
