Wheaton’s Swim and Diving Team

By Harrison Zeiburg on November 1, 2018

On October 18, Wheaton’s Swim and Diving Team made an exciting start to their new season against Bentley University, despite taking the loss. Wheaton featured many high ranking finishes among the different races and even one pool record that was broken.

Although the Men’s Team lost 178-85, there were still many high points to their first meet.  Jacob Cost ‘19 set the pool record in the 100 yard Backstroke with a time of 52.85 seconds, adding onto his numerous other team records. There were also high placed finishes in the 200 yard Medley and the 1000 yard Freestyle. Last year, the Men’s Team finished with a record of 5-8.

The Women’s Team fared better than their male counterparts with a 150-134 loss. Eva Pet ‘21, Elizabeth Bernardy ‘20, Maggie Lawler ‘20, and Delia MacLaughlin ‘22 put together a first place victory in the 200 yard Medley relay race. MacLaughlin ‘22 put together three more first place wins and was joined by Lydia DaCorte ‘21 who also had three first place finishes herself. MacLaughlin’s ‘22 fellow relay team member Bernardy ‘20 placed first in the 100 yard Breaststroke. Despite these efforts, the Women’s Team was unable to come away with a win in their first meet of the year. The Women’s team finished last year with a record of 14-1.

Despite their start to the new season, the Men’s and Women’s Swim and Diving Teams are looking forward to pushing their limits, seeing what comes next, and striving for improvement. In the words of Maclaughlin ‘22, their first meet this year “…is motivating us to work harder because we all know we have a lot of work to do to achieve our goals this season.” The next time the teams compete will be on October 27th at and against Brandeis University.
