“Winter is coming, Wheaton. Be prepared.”

By Taylor Matook on October 6, 2015

From extreme heat to the bitter cold, this campus experiences everything in between on the weather spectrum. Yesterday’s crisp air is going to be replaced by sun and temperatures in the seventies later this week. For those are you still acclimating to the unpredictability of New England weather, good news has arrived. Res Life just announced that the heat will be turned on this Thursday, Oct. 8 with the hopes that it will be fully operational by the end of that day.

With the power of heat comes great responsibility. Make sure to know how to operate your thermostat in your dorm room. The numbers on your Individual Room Control signify how high you want your heat to be. The higher the number, the higher the heat. The picture of the snowflake on the control represents “off.”

If you are like me and happen to break your Individual Room Control, which causes your entire room to become a heat box, be sure to send in a work order immediately and prop a window open in the meantime. However, windows should not be left open for extended periods of time when the heat is on because it will trick the heater into thinking it will need to work harder to warm your room up. Similarly, common room and hallway windows should remain closed as well.

All in all, don’t play mind games with your heater and all should be warm and cozy. If you find that your heat is not working, check your hallway and neighbors to see if the building heat is malfunctioning. Regardless, contact Public Safety or the Physical Plant in the case of emergencies.

Winter is coming, Wheaton. Be prepared.
