Letter from the editor Week 2 Fall 2013

All,

We need your help.

Yeah, you read that right: we need you. No, I’m not going to give you that “We’re A Community Paper” schpiel that I tend to drag out at this point of the semester. We need you to check out the awesome platforms we’ve created for the Wire.

Ending a reign of unparalleled social media ineptitude, the Wire is now back on Facebook at “The Wheaton Wire.” Julie Bogen, our amazing Senior Editor, pretty much runs the entire show over there. We’ll link exclusive articles share photos, and keep you up to date on all things Wire. You can comment on stories, share our articles, and read totally hard-hitting stuff about Wire staff.  We truly think that the Wire on Facebook will change the way you read the Wire. We also think it has the potential to greatly impact how we interact as a community. We can’t wait to see you there.

On that note, the Wire is now on Twitter (@thewheatonwire) as well. Same deal there, but we do things more concisely. Follow us into the future, peeps.

Also, WheatonWire.com is back and better than ever this year, and with web expert Monica Vendituoli at the helm, we couldn’t be more psyched about it. Read exclusive stories, click through campus photos, and watch Wire videos. You can also contribute to the site yourself—write an op-ed, do some investigative journalism of your own, or start a column! If we dig it, we’ll publish it. Email Monica at vendituoli_monica@wheatoncollege.edu for more details.

Here’s the thing—none of this stuff matters without users. It can sit around and look functional, but if people don’t use it, none of that matters. So please, please, please check out our web accounts.  If you like them, let me know (cilley_alex@wheatoncollege.edu). If you don’t, tell us why and we’ll make whatever changes are necessary to ensure that our web presence is the best it can be.

Also, I’d like to emphasize that we’re still very proud of our print edition of the Wire, and that it isn’t going anywhere. We love print media, and nothing does my heart more good than when I see someone reading a physical copy of the Wire.  We have new editors this semester—Rory Skehan at News and Adam Kilduff at Features—who are working very hard to learn the ins and outs of graphic design in order to put out an attractive print issue.

So, what I’m trying to say here is that I want you to read the Wire and I want you to enjoy it in every format we offer it in.  Being Wheaton’s only newspaper is one thing. Being a great newspaper is another. We’re the former by default, and we think you deserve the latter. So let’s make it happen.

Alex C.
